چکیده

Please be advised that this information was generated on 2016-05-01 and may be subject to change. A bstract Previous studies have shown that stressors at tenuate LiCl-induced conditioned taste aversions (CTA) but not morphine-induced CTA. The current studies ex amined the effects of footshock on the acquisition and extinction of amphetamine-induced CTA. Experiment 1 demonstrated that exposure to 30 footshocks between saccharin consumption and amphetamine injections did not alter either the acquisition or the extinction of am-phe tain ine-CTA. Experiment 2 demonstrated that expo sure to the same shock parameters 2 and 4 days before saccharin-amphetamine pairing increased the magnitude of amphetamine-CTA after one saccharin-amphetamine pairing and delayed the recovery from the CTA. Experi ment 2 also demonstrated that footshock increased the initial neophobic response to novel saccharin but did not alter subsequent saccharin consumption among saline-in jected animals. These results indicate that stress-induced facilitation of amphetamine CTA are time-dependent and contrast with reports that stressors attenuate LiCl CTA. They also add support to the contention that CTAs in duced by self-administered drugs like amphetamine are qualitatively different from CTAs induced by toxic sub stances like LiCL.

Learning and memory in agmatine-treated rats.

Agmatine, a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, was examined for its role in water maze place learning, contextual and auditory-cued (discrete) fear learning and conditioned taste aversion learning, when administered systemically. Male Wistar rats were given saline or 1, 5, 10 or 50 mg/kg agmatine ip 20 min prior to or 30 min following daily training sessions in a hidden-plat...

Adolescent exposure to methylphenidate has no effect on the aversive properties of cocaine in adulthood.

Methylphenidate is the most widely prescribed pharmacotherapeutic treatment of AD/HD in children and teens and has actions that are also involved in drug reward and reinforcement. Its clinical use has often raised concerns over the possibility that it could potentiate the risk for later drug-related problems. Animals exposed to methylphenidate during adolescence exhibit attenuated cocaine-induc...

Exposure to alcohol during adolescence alters the aversive and locomotor-activating effects of cocaine in adult rats.

OBJECTIVES The present study assessed the effect of adolescent alcohol exposure on the later aversive and locomotor-activating effects of cocaine. METHODS Male rats were exposed to alcohol or vehicle for 10days [postnatal day (PND) 30-39; 2g/kg IP]. Taste aversion conditioning began on PND 65. During aversion conditioning, subjects were presented with saccharin followed by cocaine (32mg/kg; 1...

Age-dependent differences in morphine-induced taste aversions.

Adolescence is a developmental period of particular importance given the host of neurobiological changes that occur during this stage of development. Drug use and abuse is said to be a function of the balance of its rewarding and aversive effects, and any age-dependent differences in morphine's aversive effects could impact drug intake. The present experiments examined the ability of morphine s...

The taste of monosodium glutamate (MSG), L-aspartic acid, and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) in rats: are NMDA receptors involved in MSG taste?

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is believed to elicit a unique taste perception known as umami. We have used conditioned taste aversion assays in rats to compare taste responses elicited by the glutamate receptor agonists MSG, L-aspartic acid (L-Asp), and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and to determine if these compounds share a common taste quality. This information could shed new light upon the rece...
